Sustainability

What IS sustainability and what does it mean to your business?

The truth is there is not easy answer to the latter part of that question. Embracing sustainable solutions is a journey not an "impulse buy" at the checkout stand. Determining what your company can do to embrace sustainability takes thoughtful consideration of many business factors. The good news is that this issue has reached the tipping point for adoption and from consumer, stakeholder and investor standpoints research as a whole indicates there are valuable reasons for taking the journey. The opportunity to innovate tops the list as a reason for adopting a sustainable approach; companies like 3M, Herman Miler and DuPont have saved millions of dollars and made significant positive impacts on the environment through innovative sustainable practices.

Sustainability has been described as "Meeting our needs while not compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs" (Bruntland Commission). True sustainable principles incorporate three pillars: economic, social and environmental concerns.

Leading companies are taking proactive approaches towards building internal and external policies and programs to address such concerns as carbon neutrality, zero waste, employee practices, supply chain conditions, transparency in reporting, innovating through community partnerships and reacting to consumer demands.

The conversation for sustainability has reached the point where it's not just a matter of "if" your company does this but "when". This is not something to jump into lightly and it is definitively more than labeling a product "green". This is a vision for the future.
